The main function of the Instrument Room (23 Reber) is to supply undergraduate students, faculty and staff with equipment for instructional use and in support of undergraduate laboratory courses. Some examples of equipment available are: instrumentation, electronics, dimensional measurement equipment, electrical devices, mechanical devices, audio/ visual equipment, hand tools, power tools, hardware and general consumables. (ie tape, batteries, glue, etc.)
When equipment is not being used for these purposes, equipment may also be signed out for graduate research projects. All items checked out in this manner are subject to recall for instructional use and must be returned promptly when a recall notice is issued. Failure to return items checked out on time can result in a hold being placed on your registration for the following semester or a hold on your transcript if you are graduating.
All equipment has specific sign out time limits (usually 2-3 days). The Instrument Room service attendant will inform you of the time limit upon checkout. Be certain to return these items promptly so they will be available for others to use.
You must present your Penn State ID card at the service window when signing out equipment for entry into the inventory tracking database.
The Supervisor of Engineering Laboratories is available to provide training on the usage of all the equipment available and also provide assistance in the development, design, set up and fabrication of projects assigned.
Audio Visual equipment (laptops, LCD projectors, projection screens, cameras etc.) is in high demand; therefore, users should request this equipment a week in advance and it will be issued on a "reserved first" basis. Once reservation obligations are met, then A/V equipment is signed out on a first come first serve basis. The Audio Visual Request form must be signed by a faculty or staff member if it is signed out by a student.
